Mexico Joins Haiti Relief Effort PDF Print E-mail

The Guadalajara Reporter is reporting the Mexican government is sending medical equipment, provisions and emergency personnel to Haiti following the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Haithe Caribbean country on Tuesday.

“A group of experts and consultants, along with medical specialists in injuries caused by collapsed buildings, search and rescue experts, damage assessment experts and experts in emergency administration (will be sent),” said Salvador Beltran, subsecretary of state for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Already a team of rescue workers has been sent from Jalisco to Mexico City at the request of the federal government. It includes personnel from the Guadalajara Fire Department, the Red Cross and Jalisco’s Civil Defense Department, as well as four rescue dogs. They will make their way to Port-au-Prince where they are scheduled to stay for ten days.

So far, no Mexican casualties have been reported to the embassy in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, where around 80 Mexicans are thought to reside. The embassy is taking on the task of locating each national. The quake damaged the embassy building but no one is believed to be injured....more
