Mexico is sending 2,000 police officers to boost security in violence-ridden Ciudad Juarez after human right groups criticized an army-led clampdown against drug gangs in the border city, the public security minister said Wednesday.
More than 2,500 people were killed in Juarez last year, according to media reports. Attacks have surged in response to President Felipe Calderón's war on drugs. Calderón deployed thousands of soldiers after taking office in late 2006. His strategy resulted in major victories recently, with the capture of a reputed Tijuana drug gang leader Tuesday and the killing of the head of the Beltrán Leyva cartel in western Mexico. But the clampdown has also ignited turf wars among gangs that have killed 17,000 people. -- Reuters
